"In Portugal, Radical Right targets the Ciganos" for De Volkskrant (Netherlands)

Using the local elections as a backdrop, journalist Dion Mebius and I travelled to Moura, in Alentejo for de Volkskrant. We wanted to understand why the far-right party Chega fares better in areas with a higher concentration of people from the Roma Community. "There are ciganos that have a 100 thousand euro Mercedes parked in front of their shed" said Chega's candidate for Moura's city hall. For the two days we reported in Moura, we didn't see any Mercedes. We did see alarming poverty and lack of oportunities, combined with integration problems and deep seated racism.
